Bangor native Jesse Speirs advances to second stage of PGA Tour qualifying

LEWISVILLE, Texas — Bangor native Jesse Speirs has earned a spot in the second stage of PGA Tour qualifying after tying for 15th in his first-stage event at The Lakes at Castle Hills on Friday.

Speirs shot a 2-over-par 74 Friday to finish at 1-over-par 289. The top finisher was Jace Long of Dixon, Mo., at 282. Long also had a 74 Friday as the scores were generally higher across the board for the 74 golfers who completed the stage.

There are six sites for the second stage, which will take place over the week of Nov. 11-16. The top competitors and ties at each second-stage site (usually 18-25) advance to the final stage in La Quinta, Calif., which consists of six rounds from Nov. 28-Dec. 3.

Speirs, who now lives in Memphis, had his best day of the four for making birdies, but the five he made were offset by four bogeys plus a double bogey on the final hole.

He birdied the first hole, bogeyed the next two and birdied the fourth before parring four of the next five holes. He also bogeyed No. 7 to turn at 37.

On the back, he parred the 10th, birdied 11 and 12, bogeyed 13 and 14 and birdied 15 and parred the next two before double-bogeying 18.

Over the four rounds, he played the par-5s best, at 4 under total. struggled on the par-3s, going 8 over total, bogeying each one twice with no birdies.
