LAS VEGAS – John H. Holmes Sr., 87, passed away peacefully Oct. 19, 2012, at home with his family at his bedside. He died from complications of a stroke. He was born Jan. 19, 1925, in Portage Lake, to Prescott and Bessie (Wilcox) Holmes.
He attended the local schools until age 17 when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. In 1949 he married Kathleen White of Fort Kent, and together they raised four sons. In 1955 he moved his young family to Fresno, Calif., where he lived and worked until 1975 when he took an early retirement. For the next eight years he and his wife lived and traveled in a RV exploring all of the U.S., as well as points of interest in Canada and Mexico. When they tired of traveling, they settled in Lake Havasu, Ariz., until moving to a Del Webb retirement community in Las Vegas, where they have lived for 21 years.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Ora Plourde, Glenna Cyr and Bessie McConnell. His survivors include one brother, Judson Holmes of Santa Barbara, Calif.; his wife of 63 years; sons, John Jr., Leslie, Peter and Patrick; grandchildren, John R. and Amber; and great-grandchildren, Jesse and Kendra. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well.
John will be cremated, but per his request no services are planned. At a later date there will be graveside services at his interment in the veterans cemetery in Boulder City, Nev. Those wishing to make a donation in his name may do so to the charity or hospice of their choice.
