Trees may be the heart of the forest products industry, but it’s the saw blades and chipper knives used in harvesting and preparing the wood for sale that brings the forest to the consumer. That’s where Quality Saw and Supply comes into play.
Quality Saw and Supply is a retail & service business that specializes in the sales, sharpening and repairing of saw blades and miscellaneous items. Their primary customers are in the logging, lumber, paper making, bio-mass industry, firewood processors and portable saw mills. Currently they have three service trucks and two sales vehicles on the road providing pickup, delivery and sales services to various businesses throughout Maine and New Hampshire.
What started in 2003 in his brother’s non heated garage with $15.00 in his wallet, two grinders, and five accounts; this risk taker has it turned into a busy shop employing six people full time.
“We service the pulp, paper, biomass, lumber, and logging industry as far as full-range services,” Brasslett said. “We service anything that is used for cutting, including chains, slashers, carpenter blades, and more.” And he is getting major interests from out-of-state companies for services & sales.
As one of only several businesses in the state of Maine who offer services for the industry, Brasslett noted, “You have to be versatile. [Businesses like mine] cannot focus on just one thing. We have our manufacturer’s manufacturer the chipper knives, large diameter saws and other products to our specs and standards. We also have our company logo and phone number etched on them for quality assurance purposes”.
But it’s not just the mills and forest industry professionals that are the saw and chipper knife markets target end user. With more Maine homes heating with pellets and firewood, Brasslett has seen more of the business heading into the consumer market. “But”, he said, “there will always be a need on the commercial end no matter what.”
“If you cut lumber or firewood or use toilet paper, you’ll need us,” Brasslett said. “We went from sawmills to homeowners who are sawing their own wood. Commercial factories utilize sharpening, sales and services on a constant basis. For instance, saw mill saw blades need to be serviced weekly. Large diameter saw blades are serviced every 1,200-1,600 hours”.
The owner noted that the type of services needed from a business like Quality Saw and Supply follows a five to six year pattern. “When chipping dies off, sawing comes back,” he said. “Then there will be a year where slashing is the main business.”
From the business location in West Enfield, the large diameter saws and chipper knives can be serviced and sharpened quickly and professionally. In fact, Quality Saw and Supply’s reputation and service abilities landed them a job servicing and sharpening a 100” diameter saw blade for a client ― the largest blade they’ve ever worked on.
“We enjoy being able to put a product out there with our name on it and know it’s great,” Brasslett said. “We take great pride in our work and enjoy working with the industry. Ultimately we’re out to build a business bigger and better and live up to our name.”
