Jesse Speirs tied for ninth in PGA Tour qualifying tournament

LEWISVILLE, Texas — Jesse Speirs of Memphis is tied for ninth place after the first two rounds of the PGA Tour first-stage qualifying tournament at The Lakes at Castle Hills.

Speirs, a Bangor native, posted rounds of even-par 72 Tuesday and 2-under-par 70 Wednesday for a 142 total. The leader is Jaxon Brigman of Frisco, Texas, who shot a 67 Wednesday for 138.

The top 18 and ties will advance to the second stage of qualifying next month. Approximately 18-25 golfers will advance from each of the six second-stage events to the final stage in La Quinta, Calif., starting Nov. 28. The top 25 and ties in the six-round final stage will gain entry to the PGA Tour.

Play in this first-stage tournament continues with another round Thursday and a final 18 holes on Friday.

Speirs opened Wednesday’s round with six straight pars, bogeyed No. 7 and birdied 8 and 9 to turn in 35. He bogeyed 11, which he had triple bogeyed Tuesday, to drop back to even before posting birdies on 15 and 18.

Speirs will start Thursday’s round on the first tee at 10:25 a.m.
