Rockport man arrested after crash; borrowed car burns

WALDOBORO, Maine — A 36-year-old Rockport man was arrested Monday afternoon after a car he borrowed crashed into a utility pole and caught fire, police said.

Following the crash on Route 1, James Clark was charged with operating after his driver’s license had been revoked, said Waldoboro Police Chief William Labombardie.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. when Clark, driving a Toyota Corolla that he borrowed from someone who was not named, crashed into a utility pole, the chief said. The car caught fire and was destroyed.

The chief said Clark got out of the car on his own and then ran into the woods to find a dog that had been in his vehicle.

When he came out of the woods after finding the dog, Clark was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta to be checked for injuries, the chief said. He was arrested at the hospital, the chief said.

Emergency response to the crash was delayed because the pole that the vehicle struck was one that had communications amplification equipment on it. The accident temporarily knocked out communications for the fire department and emergency medical department in town, the chief said.
