Fire destroys Oxford auto repair shop

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

OXFORD, Maine — An auto repair shop on Old County Road was destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening.

Oxford Fire Chief Scott Hunter said the garage’s owner did not have insurance and the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

“[The owner] was in there doing some welding and grinding on a project he was working on,” earlier in the day, Hunter said.

The owner, who lives about 100 feet away from the garage, closed his shop around 3:30 p.m. while firefighters were called to the scene just after 7 p.m., the chief said.

Hunter said the owner had a feeling something was amiss when his dog was acting funny, and a look out his window confirmed the dog’s suspicion.

“By the time he looked outside the fire was already through the roof,” said Hunter.

When firefighters arrived, the building, which had no vehicles inside, was engulfed in flames. Hunter said it was a total loss.

Oxford, Norway, Paris, Poland, Casco and Otisfield firefighters assisted at the scene. No firefighters were injured.
