Final pairings have been established for the state’s high school volleyball tournament, with Biddeford and Washington Academy of East Machias at the top of the Heal point rankings in Classes A and B.
One preliminary-round match, a Class A encounter between No. 9 Windham and No. 8 Cape Elizabeth, is scheduled for Thursday, with quarterfinals this Saturday, semifinals on Oct. 24 and the state championship matches in both classes on Oct. 27 at Husson University in Bangor.
Biddeford is the state’s lone unbeaten team at 14-0, and is followed in the Class A rankings by 12-2 Greely of Cumberland Center, the defending state champion whose only losses this fall have come against Biddeford, the 2010 state champ.
Eastern Maine programs Ellsworth (12-2) and perennial contender Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor (9-5) finished third and fourth in the final standings. Ellsworth will host No. 6 Scarborough (9-4), a state finalist in 2011, while MDI will host No. 7 Gorham in quarterfinals matching teams that did not meet during the regular season.
In other Class A quarterfinals, No. 7 Falmouth (9-5) will visit Greely while Biddeford awaits the Cape Elizabeth-Windham winner.
Washington Academy, which won the first Class B state championship in 2010, is the top seed in this year’s Class B field with a 10-4 record. The Raiders edged out 2011 state finalist Bucksport, the second seed with an 8-6 record, to earn a quarterfinal bye.
Washington Academy defeated Bucksport on Sept. 29 in five sets during the teams’ lone regular-season match.
Calais (9-5) is third in the final Heal points, followed by defending state champion Yarmouth (10-4), Machias (7-7), Jonesport-Beals (7-7) and Narraguagus of Harrington (6-8) in the seven-team playoff field.
Quarterfinal matchups Saturday have Narraguagus at Bucksport, Jonesport-Beals at Calais and Machias at Yarmouth.
Bucksport swept Narraguagus in three sets during a Sept. 24 regular-season match while Calais defeated Jonesport-Beals twice, 3-0 at Calais on Sept. 19 and 3-1 at Jonesport on Oct. 5. Yarmouth and Machias have not met this fall.
