Candidates forum scheduled in Houlton

HOULTON, Maine — With Election Day just around the corner, officials at the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce are once again preparing for their candidates forum.

The public forum scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24, will give voters a chance to learn more the men running for a seat on the Town Council.

Jane Torres, the new executive director of the Chamber, is organizing the event, which will feature the five candidates running for two open seats on the council.

Councilor Nancy Ketch’s seat is up for grabs due to term limits. Incumbent Mike Jenkins’ seat also is available. He is vying to retain it.

The other candidates are Phil Bernaiche, Carl Lord Jr, Daniel Peabody and Phil Cloney.

Bernaiche has been elected to the council several times but has failed in repeated attempts over the last few years to regain his seat. Lord served one term and also has not succeeded in being re-elected.

Peabody and Cloney have never served on the council.

The forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Office and will be broadcast on the town’s public access channel. Candidates will respond to questions from the moderators and those called in by the public.

Voters in Houlton also will be choosing members for the SAD 29 school board on Election Day. Three incumbents, Lori Holmes, Bruce Clark and Tammy Goetsch, are running unopposed for re-election.

Gary Hagan and Stephen Nelson are seeking two vacant seats on the Houlton Water Co. board of directors.

Dale Flewelling is running for a one year seat on the board of budget review.

Anthony Delucca, Carl Lord Jr., Dorothy Donahue and Phil Bernaiche are vying for three open seats on the board of budget review. Those seats are for three year terms.

Iva Sussman is running unopposed for a seat on the Cary Library board of trustees.
