Auburn hires Brewer clerk as new assistant manager

AUBURN, Maine — Brewer City Clerk Howard Kroll, a 23-year Navy veteran, will become Auburn’s new assistant city manager.

City Manager Clinton Deschene announced Kroll’s hiring in a press release Tuesday morning.

Kroll said Tuesday that he’s scheduled to start in Auburn on Nov. 19.

“Clinton is putting together a to-do list. I know that,” Kroll said. “I’m really looking forward to getting started.”

Kroll has served as Brewer’s city clerk since 2007. He served as assistant city manager there beginning in 2002.

“The clerk we’d had for years had left, and the council wanted to keep the job in-house,” he said. “They offered it to me. It was big step up, reporting directly to the council, but doing many of the same jobs I’d done as assistant.”

Kroll has more than 14 years in municipal service, working as town manager in both Milbridge and St. Agatha. He has an undergraduate degree in public management and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Maine and is credentialed through the Maine Town, City and County Management Association.

Kroll is also a Supply Corps officer in the Naval Reserves and is a Navy veteran with nearly 23 years of service. He recently returned from an Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment.

He serves on the Maine Municipal Association’s Legislative Policy Committee, the USS New Jersey Veterans Association, the Iraqi and Afghanistan Veterans Association, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
