ORLAND AND BANGOR – Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her late teens, Ardith Clair Houghton, 72, fought a long and courageous battle with the debilitating disease until her death Oct. 11, 2012. Born May 11, 1940, in Boston, Ardith was the daughter of Dr. Miles N. Clair and Carolyn Green Clair.
She graduated from Winsor School, Boston, attended Vassar College, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University in 1962. Vowing never to let her disease stop her, she then began a career in social work, first working for the Kentucky division of the American Cancer Society at Frontier Nursing Service, Wendover, Ky., and then becoming a staff member of state welfare offices in Massachusetts, Kentucky and Maine. Outside her professional duties, Ardith was an active member of Buzzards Yacht Club, Cataumet, Mass., Daughters of the American Revolution of Boston, Junior League of Boston and Vassar Club of Maine.
Ardith is survived by her beloved husband of 35 years, Walter Leslie Houghton of Bangor; and son, David Miles Houghton and wife, Elizabeth C. Houghton, and granddaughter, Samantha Ellen Houghton, of Hampden. She also is survived by her sister, Valerie C. Stelling and husband, John D. Stelling, of Cambridge, Mass.; sister, Cynthia Y. Norkin of Cataumet, Mass.; niece, Meredith T. Stelling of Yarrow Point, Wash., Allison W. Stelling of Brookline, Mass., Alexandra (Sasha) C. Norkin of New York City; stepchildren, Kathleen M. Houghton and Robert A. Houghton; several great-nieces, one great-nephew, and many dear friends. Her family thanks the staff at Loving Touch In Home Care, New England Home Health Care, Stillwater Health Care and Beacon Hospice for the care and comfort they provided to Ardith.
A graveside funeral service was held Oct. 13 for family at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Arrangements were made by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, Bucksport.
