Dental program’s return to aid Washington County residents, Machias businesses

The New York University College of Dentistry Henry Schein Cares Global Student Outreach Program is getting ready to return to Washington County. The impact on both the residents of Washington County and the local businesses in Machias is significant, according to organizers.

More than 3,000 patients have visited since the first clinic in the fall of 2010. All those extra people coming to Machias have created an economic boost for dozens of gas stations, restaurants, hotels, grocery stores and other businesses. During each weeklong outreach program, NYU College of Dentistry spends $30,000 in Machias to house and feed the staff and students that travel with them during clinic week. That does not include the amount spent by all those who travel to Machias to get dental care.

The dental clinic is based at the Lee Pellon Center at 90 Main St. In the past couple of years, residents of Washington County have gotten used to the clinic happening in October. This year, there is a date change. It will be held Nov. 5-10 but will not operate Thursday, Nov. 8. Open to Maine residents having trouble accessing dental care. the clinic is not meant to replace regular care they are already receiving if they have a dentist. Services are provided at no cost to the patient, but insurance and MaineCare will be accepted if available available. Children will receive complete care, while adults are seen for emergencies on a walk- in basis.

The program is made possible by Delta Dental Plan of Maine, Northeast Delta Dental Foundation and Henry Schein Cares. The partners involved in planning and implementation are NYU College of Dentistry, Caring Hands of Maine, Washington County Children’s Program, Washington Hancock Community Agency and Child and Family Opportunities.
