Bangor Hydro and MPS launch heat pump rebate program

By Whit Richardson, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. and Maine Public Service are rolling out a heat pump program for up to 500 customers in each of their service territories, according to a media release.

The pilot program offers financial incentives for residential and small commercial customers to purchase and install energy efficient heat pumps, which are used as a supplemental heating source in heavily used areas of a home or business.

Rebates of $600 are available for the first 330 customers who commit to the program. On-bill financing will be available for up to 500 customers in each service territory.

The program was designed to save customers money as the winter heating season quickly approaches.

“Heat pump technology isn’t new, but newer units are rated to perform much better in cold climates,” Gerry Chasse, president of Bangor Hydro and Maine Public Service, said in a statement. “New, energy efficient units can be a very cost-effective, supplemental heat source, providing as much as 80-90 percent of the necessary heat over the winter months at less than half the cost of oil.”

Customers can find details of the program, including the application, heat-pump specifications and registered installers at bangorhydro.com or www.mainepublicservice.com or by calling Bangor Hydro’s customer service center at 947-2414 or 800-499-6600 or Maine Public Service’s customer service center at 760-2300 or 877-655-4448.
