BREWER, Maine — With six candidates vying for two seats on the Brewer School Committee, the annual meet the candidates forum is a great way for residents to learn at one time what all the prospective board members think, organizer Kim Kelley said Tuesday.
“This is the first time in at least 20 years we’ve had six people running for the school board,” said Kelley, a member of the Brewer Education Association, which sponsors the forum.
Three people, including two incumbents, also are running for two City Council seats up for grabs in the November election.
The Oct. 30 meet the candidates forum will be held at Brewer Community School. There will be a meet-and-greet with light refreshments at 6 p.m., followed by the candidates forum at 6:30 p.m. in the performing arts center.
Mark Beal, Mark Chambers, Mark Farley, Kevin Forrest, Dani O’Halloran and Tyler Smith are on the ballot to replace departing school board members Amanda Bost, who is the chairwoman, and William Birch, who both decided not to run.
Longtime City Council member Larry Doughty and Mayor Jerry Goss are running for their seats on the council against local mail carrier Matthew Vachon.
Ruth Marie Spellman, a former school board member, is the lone candidate for the one open Brewer High trustees seat.
