Man charged with arson after fire at his apartment, police say

PORTLAND, Maine — Police charged the tenant Tuesday with arson in connection with a fire that broke out at his apartment building on Monday afternoon.

The tenant, Michael Irving, 45, was standing outside the building at 9 Freeman St. when police and firefighters arrived, Portland police said in a news release Tuesday announcing the arrest.

Earlier Tuesday, Portland Fire Chief Robert Wassick said the fire was knocked down quickly, and damage was minimal to the building. No one was injured, and the the Portland Fire Department didn’t require any assistance at the scene.

Irving is being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $50,000 bail.
