Police say Lake Auburn drowning was suicide

AUBURN, Maine — A body found floating in Lake Auburn on Thursday was that of a 49-year-old Utah man who committed suicide, police said Friday.

Investigators made the announcement following an autopsy at the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta where an official identified the victim as David Shields.

A friend of the family, who did not want to be identified, said Shields used to live in Auburn before moving to Massachusetts and then to Utah. He had previously talked about taking his life, she said, and attempted it at least once in the past.

It was not immediately clear how Shields got to Auburn from Utah. The woman said she believed Shields had left a suicide note but police did not comment on that part of the investigation.

Auburn Water and Sewer District workers found the body floating in the water off the west shore of the lake at about 9:20 a.m. Thursday.

Police did not say how long the man was believed to have been in the water. The case remains under investigation.
