BANGOR – Daniel Edward Orr passed away Oct. 4, 2012, in Bangor. He was born April 26, 1922, in Bangor, to George W. and Eva H. (Fitz) Orr.
Daniel graduated from Bangor High School in 1940. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Gordon College, his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Gordon Divinity School, and his Master of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts. He married Violette M. Gerrish Aug. 27, 1948, and was ordained to the ministry in the American Baptist Church in 1951. He served churches in New England, Nevada and New York, and taught at all levels in public schools throughout a long career. He was a gifted and thoughtful teacher and writer and had a lifelong passion for gardening. He had a quick wit and loved wordplay.
He is survived by his wife, Violette; son, Thomas Orr of Morristown, Ind.; daughters, Mary Sargent of Danvers, Mass., and Elizabeth Toner of Bangor; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Carlton – Bangor’s first World War II casualty; and sisters, Clytie Orr, Dorothy Clark, Angela Perry and Margaret North.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Essex Street Baptist Church, 84 Essex St., Bangor, with the Rev. Randall Wilbur officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Church Fellowship Hall after the service. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery, Bangor, after the reception.
