Hallowell woman charged with OUI after two early-afternoon accidents

HALLOWELL, Maine — A Hallowell woman was arrested on a charge of operating under the influence Tuesday after being involved in a pair of minor accidents on Route 201, according to police.

Melissa Douglass, 46, was headed back to her hometown from Bangor just after noon when the trouble started, according to Hallowell police Chief Eric Nason.

Douglass was involved in a minor accident on Route 201 in Augusta on her way into town, Nason said. She gave the other driver her information and continued on, according to Nason.

Hallowell officers received a tip that Douglass might be drunk, and then notification from officers in Augusta that she had been involved in another minor accident, the chief said.

Nason stationed his cruiser on Second Street and had no trouble identifying Douglass’ vehicle.

“She had damage to her front end. Also, her air bag had been deployed,” Nason said.

Police placed Douglass under arrest and charged her with OUI, Nason said. Hallowell police are working with their counterparts in Augusta and the Maine State Police to determine whether Douglass will face further charges stemming from the accidents.

Douglass was booked into the Kennebec County Jail and later released on bail.
