Fairfield woman uninjured after being pinned between car, tree

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

WATERVILLE, Maine — A Fairfield woman escaped injury Tuesday after she was pinned between her vehicle and a tree while exiting her car, police said.

Laurie Smith, 48, was attempting to park her vehicle near Dollar Tree when the accident happened around 2 p.m., Waterville police Sgt. Mike Benecke said.

Smith, who was treated at the scene by rescue personnel, claimed that her brakes failed, but an inspection of the vehicle determined they were working fine, Benecke said.

“It looks like the vehicle may not have been [shifted] all the way into park when the operator was exiting [the car] and it lurched forward,” the sergeant said.

Smith’s legs were stuck between the door and the tree, but authorities were able to free her without incident, Benecke said. The vehicle’s door sustained minor damage.
