OAKLAND, MaineChapin LaBelle has been named the interim football coach at Messalonskee High School, according to published reports.

LaBelle replaces Wes Littlefield, who resigned last Thursday after an incident involving a player at practice the previous day. He subsequently was charged with misdemeanor assault, according to the Oakland Police Department, and is scheduled to appear in Waterville District Court on Nov. 20.

LaBelle, a Messalonskee graduate, returned to the coaching staff at his alma mater this fall after spending the previous eight years in a similar post at Skowhegan.

He shared coaching duties with fellow Messalonskee assistant Rob Rodrigue in Littlefield’s absence during Messalonskee’s 41-0 victory at Oxford Hills of South Paris last Friday.

Messalonskee is 4-0 in the Pine Tree Conference Class A ranks this fall and plays again Friday night at 0-4 Edward Little of Auburn.
