BIDDEFORD, Maine — Defense contractor VingTech has secured a $10 million contract to provide the U.S. Navy with sophisticated fire control systems for machine guns.

The contract was awarded on a competitive basis. VingTech beat out three other companies to secure the business, which will be apportioned over the next five years, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

VingTech is the U.S. subsidiary of Norwegian company Simrad Optronics ASA, which in turn is owned by German giant Rheinmetall Defence. Simrad Optronics established the company in Biddeford in January 2007 and currently employs approximately 35 people, according to Torgrim Jorgensen, VingTech’s vice president of programs and sales.

Maine’s congressional delegation used the news as an opportunity to tout Maine’s manufacturing businesses and workforce.

“VingTech’s receipt of this competitive contract award over several other competitors shows just how good Maine companies are and how talented our workforce is,” Sen. Susan Collins, a member of both the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, said in a statement. “I could not be more proud of their work and their important contributions to our national security.”

Rep. Chellie Pingree, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said VingTech’s employees exemplify the Maine worker’s reputation for “high quality workmanship and a strong work ethic.”

Pingree said the contract would support “good-paying manufacturing jobs” in the Biddeford area for the next several years.

VingTech will also benefit from a recent contract worth nearly $1 billion to build remote weapon stations for the U.S. Army. The contract was awarded to a Norwegian company, Kongsberg Protech Systems, but as a subcontractor VingTech will complete most of the production work at its Biddeford plant.
