DYER BROOK – Ryan Paul Bates, 36, died Sept. 24, 2012 as a result of a car accident. He was born Sept. 2, 1976, in Houlton, the son of Carroll H. Bates Sr. and Susan (Coolong) York.
Ryan grew up in Haynesville and Mount Chase, where he had plenty of opportunities to hunt, fish and enjoy the great outdoors. He graduated from Katahdin High School in 1995. After graduation, he entered the work force and became a skilled carpenter. Ryan’s greatest accomplishment in life was being the proud father of his two sons, Bryce Hadley and Hayson James. Ryan was a great dad.
In addition to his two sons, Ryan is survived by his loving parents, Susan York of Island Falls and Carroll and Mary Bates of Mount Chase; his brother, Carroll Bates Jr. and his wife, Nicole; his niece and nephew, Ora Kinsley and Carroll III of Glenburn; aunts and uncles, Glenda and Raymond Sommers, Marie and Tom Chase, all of Patten, Kemp and Debbie Coolong of Mount Chase, Dan and Nancy Coolong of Greenville, R.I.; and many cousins. Since Ryan never met anyone that he didn’t befriend, he will also be fondly remembered by many others near and dear, especially Gabe and Josh.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Bowers Funeral Home, 56 Sherman St., Island Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bryce and Hayson Bates Scholarship Fund, care of Susan York, P.O. Box 515, Island Falls, ME 04747.
