FALMOUTH, Maine — A Portland couple was lucky to escape with minor injuries after their vehicle rolled over on the Maine Turnpike Tuesday, according to police.

Ali Ali, 56, and his wife, Mumina, 47, were headed southbound when their Kia sedan made contact with the rumble strip on the right-hand side of the roadway, Trooper Duane Doughty of the Maine State Police said.

When Ali hit the rumble strip, Doughty said he panicked, slammed on his brakes and rolled into the median. The car flipped and landed upright, Doughty said.

“They were walking around but they seemed to be complaining of neck pain,” Doughty said. “We weren’t able to communicate with them real well.”

Doughty noted that the couple is Somali, and that Ali doesn’t have a lot of experience driving on the turnpike.

“The ambulance took them to Maine Medical Center as a precaution,” said Doughty.

Doughty said the couple were not wearing seat belts, and the car is likely a total loss.
