GOULDSBORO – Charles L. Bagley Sr., 74, beloved husband of Susan (Worcester) Bagley, died Sept. 21, 2012, surrounded by his family at his home, after a battle with cancer. He was born April 15, 1938, in East Sullivan, the son of Lawrence L. Bagley Sr. and June (Martin) Bagley.
After graduation from Sumner Memorial High School, Charlie joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a boilerman on various ships in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. He returned home and went to work at Winter Harbor Garage as a mechanic and driving a school bus. He went to work for Tucker’s Oil Co., Cherryfield, and Dead River Co., Ellsworth, as a furnace technician before starting his own repair service. He was also a caretaker to numerous properties and continued to drive the school bus for 43 years. He was a lifetime member of Osceola Grange, Harrington, and Knights of Pythias, Gouldsboro. The job that gave him the most pride and satisfaction however was that of police officer. He started work as a constable in Gouldsboro, a volunteer position. In the early 1970s, he and Bob Newman decided there needed to be some patrols to keep an eye on property and cut down on crime. They did this as volunteers with their own vehicles for a number of years before Gouldsboro Police Department was formed. Charlie was a member of the police department until his retirement in 2008 as sergeant. He also was a member of Winter Harbor Police Department. In his spare time, he loved to hunt and fish and he especially liked going “up to camp” in Smyrna Mills with his family and best friends, Bobby Driscoll and Everett Haycock. Charlie loved his family and was always the one they would go to with any problems and he would take care of them.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan E. Bagley; his children, Ralph Bagley and his wife, Nancy, of Sheepscot, Corinne Barber and her husband, Jim, of Ellsworth, Patrick Presnell and his wife, Michelle, of Gouldsboro and Angela Sawyer and her husband, Todd, of Ellsworth; and foster daughter, Cathy Nelson of Colorado. He was papa to his eight grandchildren, Joshua, Jesse, Erin, Amanda, Charles, Trevor, Paige and Natalie; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Autumn and Logan. He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Charles Jr. “Chuckie”; his daughter-in-law, Charlene; his grandson, BJ; and granddaughter, Cady Lyn. He also said goodbye earlier this year to his constant companion and best friend, his beloved German shepherd, Sheba.
