Richard H. Hollrock

SIMSBURY, CONN., and HAMPDEN – Richard H. Hollrock, 91, passed away peacefully Sept. 23, 2012 at a Bangor hospital surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Crestwood, N.Y., to George L. and Mathilde (Torborg) Hollrock.

Richard graduated from Roosevelt High School, class of 1938 and then Brown University, class of 1942 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Early on in his career he was employed by Sikorsky Aircraft Corp and was a pioneer in the helicopter industry. He later worked as a research engineer at Kaman Aircraft Corp in Bloomfield, Conn., for more than 40 years. Lt. Hollrock served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a bomber pilot. He was stationed in Italy with a Veteran B-24 Liberator Squadron that has served nearly a year in the Italian Campaign. At age 23 he was awarded the air medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flight while participating in sustained operational activities against the enemy. He and his wife, Anne lived in Granby, Conn., and then Simsbury, Conn., for 40 years before retiring and moving to Hampden to be closer to their children. Richard will be greatly missed by his family for his exceptional kindness, encouragement to others, his sweet smile and gentle ways.

Richard is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Anne of Hampden; his son, Rick and wife, Pat of S. Deerfield, Mass.; their six children, Alex, Ruby, Leah, Neal, Lynn and Richie; three daughters, Alane Bamberger and husband, Gary, of Conway, N.H., and their two children, Katie and Marc, Joyce Harrison and husband, Dan, of Hampden, and their two children, Craig and wife, Lauren and Heidi, and Ardelle Hollrock of Hampden and daughter, Anna.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 70 Western Ave., Hampden. Interment will be immediately after at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. Arrangements entrusted to Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden.
