Grace L. (Stanley) Grindle

BAR HARBOR – Grace L. (Stanley) Grindle slipped quietly from this life Sept. 21, 2012, at Birch Bay Village, a local health care facility in Bar Harbor, after a valiant struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Nov. 5, 1926, to Bertrand and Alice (Williams) Stanley of Bar Harbor.
In her younger years, Grace was well known for her lovely singing voice and sang for many Bar Harbor High School events, as well as with local bands. On Aug. 17, 1946, she married Ted Grindle Jr. of Bar Harbor, son of Theodore and Gertrude Grindle. Grace was a contented homemaker with a special passion for infants. After raising her daughter and son, Grace took several young children into her care when their own mothers needed to return to work. Later in life, she learned to hook rugs and her family treasures gifts she created especially for them.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce G. Shaw and husband, Winston, of Bar Harbor; three grandchildren, Jane Elizabeth Couch and husband, Richard, of Merrimack, N.H., David James Coston and wife, Lindsay, of Bar Harbor, and Theodore Grindle IV of Santa Barbara, Calif; and great-grandson, Sebastian Chisolm-Grindle, of Santa Barbara, Calif. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret S. Bishop of Bar Harbor; as well as by several nieces and nephews. Grace was predeceased by her son, Theodore Grindle III, in 1992; her husband of 53 years in 1999; and sisters, Ethel Stanley and Kathleen Kelley, both of Bar Harbor. Her family also wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Birch Bay for their tender and compassionate care during the 2 1/2 years Grace was a resident there.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Hillside Cemetery, Hulls Cove, with the Rev. Sandra Reed officiating. Contributions to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905, in memory of Grace would be meaningful. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert.
