Frederick E. ‘Smokey’ Lawrence

BANGOR – Frederick E. “Smokey” Lawrence, 72, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, in Bangor. He was born June 11, 1940, in Bangor, the son of John D. Lawrence and Dorothy (Diamond) Lawrence.

Smokey worked for the city of Bangor Public Works Department for many years before retiring. Smokey was a well-known and respected member of the community having spent more than three decades officiating baseball, softball, basketball and football. He was well respected by athletes, coaches and officials from around the state.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Marjorie Clark and Norma Robertson; as well as three brothers, Joseph Lawrence, Gerald Lawrence and Donald Lawrence. Smokey is survived by a son, Frederick “Buddy” Lawrence Jr. and his wife, Amber, of Brewer; a daughter, Robin Bouchard and her husband, Patrick, of Winterport; five grandchildren, Alex Lawrence, Abigail Lawrence, Aaron Lawrence, Camryn Bouchard and Kristen Bouchard; two brothers, Douglas Lawrence and Kenneth White; two sisters, Mary Ellen Baldwin and Melanie Emerson; many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, with the Rev. Charles Hurst, pastor of Apostolic Lighthouse Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, after the service.
