Rockland to focus again on Camden Street development

Posted Sept. 20, 2012, at 2:18 p.m.

ROCKLAND, Maine — The Rockland Economic Development Advisory Committee in partnership with Friends of Midcoast Maine will host a public workshop next week on a vision for the busy commercial section of Camden Street that runs from Maverick Street to the Rockport town line.

The workshop, the second in a series public meetings the economic development committee is hosting, will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Breakwater Marketplace at 91 Camden St.

The workshops are being held as the city prepares for the loss of Walmart, which is expected to open its new store a few miles away in Thomaston late in 2013.

“At our June public meeting we heard from numerous residents that people were interested in creating an identity for this area,” Joanne Billington, chair of REDAC, stated in a press release. “That will be the purpose of this meeting in September.”

The two-hour workshop will focus on answering two key questions. What makes Rockland unique? What do you as an individual value about Rockland?

“If you live, work, shop in Rockland, REDAC wants to hear your opinions. We need your help. Be a part of the planning for this section of our community,” Rockland Community Development Director Audrey Lovering said in the release.

This series of workshops and technical assistance is provided in partnership with Friends of Midcoast Maine, a regional nonprofit organization that assists communities in planning for their futures. Executive Director Jane Lafleur noted in the release that “these workshops will focus on the issues Rockland people care about and will bring in assistance to address economic issues, walkability, safety, traffic and commercial and residential diversity.”

Refreshments will be served.
