Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month locally

The Bangor Public Library’s Lecture Room is the site for Latin flavor in Sept. and Oct. That’s because CHISPA Centro Hispano will present its fifth annual lectures series. Each presentation will be held from 6:30-7:45 p.m.

The lecture series kicked of on Sept. 15 with a lecture by Mexican author and Washington D.C. physician Dr. Margarita Kullick. Her lecture, “From Physician to Writer: Living the Passion of Life’s Experience,” detailed her journey to writing “La hora del perdón”.

On Sept. 20, Andy Sandweiss, a sophomore at Bangor High School, will speak about his experiences travelling to Peru for over 15 years from 6:30-7:45 p.m. Sandweiss is a Bangor-born resident and is of Peruvian descent. His presentation is called “On the Road in Peru with Veteran Traveller Andy Sandweiss.”

Mexico’s potential as a major player in a global economy is the topic of Raul Urbina’s presentation on Sept. 27. Urbina is a native of Mexico City and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maine’s Mechanical Engineering Department. Urbina is part of the UMaine Tidal Energy Team and earned a master’s degree from UMaine in 2000. Urbina returned to Mexico after earning his master’s to work for a transnational company in the energy sector. Urbina will share his experiences and insight during his presentation “Mexico, Si se puede.”

Kicking off October, four local experts will discuss the myths and realities of Cuba. Hampden Academy History teacher Emily Albee, UMaine anthropology student Elizabeth Detwiler, and UMaien professors Barbara Blazej, Maria Sandweiss, and Phyllis Brazee have all travelled to Cuba. They will talk about their experiences with those in attendance.

Finishing off the series is a delicious look at Latin flavors with Puerto Rican Juan Hernández and Argentinian Alejandro Rave. The men’s presentation, “Looking to cook something different? Come and see us…We can help you,” will take a look at Latin food and flavors and how to translate it to your table. They’ll teach participants how to handle produce and products, share tips for cooking Latin-American foods, and even disclose some secret family recipes.
