Vincent ‘Vinnie’ Fernandes

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Vincent “Vinnie” Fernandes, 76, passed peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, surrounded by his family at St. Luke’s Hospital. Vincent was born in New Bedford, son of the late August and Ida (Mendoza) Fernandes, and was the husband of Geraldine “Gerry” (Sylvia) Fernandes.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, attaining the rank of petty cfficer second class. Vinnie was a lifelong New Bedford, Mass., resident, wintering in Port St. Lucie, Fla., for many years. He was the owner of Fernandes and Sons Construction. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, receiving the Marian Medal in 1995. Vinnie’s involvement with his church as well as his community was widely recognized. He was chairman of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Restoration Project, president of Portuguese American Social Club, was honored by Portuguese American Federation, a former member of Prince Henry Society, serving as treasurer, and received the Pilot Award. He was a member of 100 Club of Massachusetts and American Portuguese War Veterans. Vincent enjoyed his flower garden in Florida, collecting antiques and memorabilia, but his greatest joy came from his grandchildren.

Family includes his wife, Geraldine “Gerry” (Sylvia) Fernandes of New Bedford, Mass.; two sons, Vincent R. Fernandes of Florida, and Brian M. Fernandes and wife, Sharon, of Dartmouth, Mass.; two daughters, Susan Potvin and husband, Ron, of Newport, and Debra Fernandes and companion, Derek Fredette, of New Bedford, Mass.; one brother, Gus Fernandes and wife, Doris, of New Bedford, Mass.; one sister, Joanne Methia of Dartmouth, Mass.; best friend, Matt Pereira of Dartmouth, Mass.; grandchildren, Erika Fernandes, Matthew Fernandes, Jonathan Medeiros, Kimberly Braley, Emma Gallimore, Noah Potvin, Alisha Fernandes, the late Nicholas Fernandes, Brenna Oliver and Rena Oliver; several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held 4-9 p.m. Friday at Aubertine-Lopes Funeral Home, 129 Allen St., New Bedford, Mass. A Mass of Christian burial to which everyone is invited will be celebrated 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Entombment with military honors will be at St. John Cemetery.
