BELFAST, Maine — The Waldo Leadership Circle, a group of nonprofit health care, social service, education, law enforcement, local government and spiritual group leaders, is hosting a forum for Waldo County candidates seeking election to the Legislature. The forum will be on Friday, Sept. 21, at Waldo County General Hospital’s Education Center off Northport Avenue.
The forum begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to continue until 11 a.m., with Belfast attorney Lee Woodward moderating. Questions submitted in writing to Woodward will be asked of the candidates in the six races.
Ten of the 12 candidates are expected to attend, said Keith Small, executive director of Waldo County CAP.
In House District 41, Republican incumbent James Gillway of Searsport is being challenged by Democrat Meredith Ares, also of Searsport.
In House District 42, Republican Leo LaChance is being challenged by independent Joe Brooks, a former Democratic legislator. Both live in Winterport.
In House District 43, Republican Donna Hopkins of Belmont is challenging incumbent Democrat Erin Herbig of Belfast.
In House District 44, Lloyd Chase, a Democrat, of Liberty is facing Republican Jethro Pease of Morrill.
In House District 45, incumbent Republican Ryan Harmon of Palermo is being challenged by Democrat Brian Jones of Freedom.
And in the Senate District 23 contest, incumbent Republican Mike Thibodeau of Winterport is being challenged by Glenn “Chip” Curry of Belfast.
Small said Harmon and Curry may be unable to attend.
