Newport police pursuing leads on Rite Aid robbery suspect

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

NEWPORT, Maine — Newport police are following up on tips and leads they have received in relation to last weekend’s robbery at the Rite Aid Pharmacy on the corner of Routes 2 and 7.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, the robber had not yet been apprehended, a Newport police officer confirmed.

Sunday afternoon’s robbery was the second in a month at that location, according to Newport police Lt. Randy Wing.

Wing said Monday that he and other investigators are pursuing several tips they have received in connection with Sunday’s robbery, which occurred shortly after 2 p.m. In addition to Newport police, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police were sent to the crime scene.

The suspect “went into the store, presented a note demanding prescription drugs. He did make off with drugs,” Wing said Sunday in an interview with the Bangor Daily News.

The suspect did not display a weapon. Wing wouldn’t say how many or what kind of prescription drugs were taken. No one in the store was injured.

Wing described the suspect as a white male in his 20s with a full, dark beard with scruffy beard growth down his neck, about 6 feet tall, and medium in build. He was wearing a Boston Red Sox cap, a dark pullover sweatshirt with colorful graphics on the front, dark jeans and wrap-around sunglasses during the heist.

The suspect last was seen leaving the store running through the wooded area toward the tractor-trailer parking area next to State Farm along Main Street, Wing said. He reportedly got into a small silver car, likely a General Motors make.

Wing said he and other investigators are comparing the details surrounding Sunday’s robbery and a similar robbery that occurred on Aug. 16 to see if they might be connected and if the same person might have been involved in both. The robber got away with prescription drugs in that case.

While Wing said Sunday that it does not appear the same person committed both robberies, he said Monday that police are not yet ready to rule that out.

Wing said the surveillance images provided to police are somewhat grainy. Newport police have asked their counterparts in Brewer to enhance the images using some recent technology that department has acquired.

Rite Aid Pharmacy remained closed more than an hour after Sunday’s robbery.

Anyone with information on either pharmacy robbery is asked to call the Newport Police Department at 368-3263.
