PORTLAND, Maine – The University of Maine School of Law will hold its largest reunion of graduates Friday and Saturday to coincide with the school’s 50th anniversary.

This year, the reunion celebrates the classes of 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007, according to a press release issued Tuesday.

“The reunion and the commemoration of the 50th both serve as opportunities to celebrate the many people who have made Maine Law such a distinctive place,” Law School Dean Peter Pitegoff said in the press release. “We also mark this moment to look ahead and at how we can make this great law school even better.”

The dean is scheduled to deliver an address about the state of the law school Saturday.

Distinguished guests will include three members of the Class of 1962: Superior Court Justice Carl O. Bradford of Yarmouth, who recently was reappointed to the bench by the Maine Legislature; attorney William Troubh of Portland; and attorney Phil Weiner of Silver Spring, Md.

The law school traces its roots to 1898 and Maine’s original law school in Bangor. The modern version of the school opened 50 years ago in Portland, following approval by the Legislature.

In the fall of 1962, Maine Law had 27 students, three professors, a librarian and assistant librarian, according to information posted on the school’s website. Under the leadership of founding Dean Edward S. Godfrey, the law school was accredited by the American Bar Association four years after it opened.

Maine Law became part of the newly created University of Maine System in 1970 and moved to its current location at 246 Deering Ave. in Portland two years later. Over the past 50 years, more than 3,000 men and women have gone on to practice law in the U.S. and abroad after graduating from the law school.
