Saco man facing domestic assault charges after allegedly leaving girlfriend with bloody elbow

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

SACO, Maine — A Saco man who denied to police that he assaulted his girlfriend was arrested Saturday night.

Michael Patrick Ireland, 50, left the woman bleeding from the elbow and subsequently fled her Water Street home, according to Saco Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland.

Moments later, Ireland came back to the scene, and police were already there.

“He must’ve had a moment of clarity,” said Holland.

When an intoxicated Ireland returned, he told police he didn’t assault the woman, but evidence was not on his side, according to Holland.

“There was enough evidence to support her side and he got arrested,” Holland said.

Despite being uncooperative with police — Holland said Ireland “was not too happy about being arrested” — officers were able to get him in custody and take him to the York County Jail. Ireland was charged with domestic violence assault.

Ireland remains behind bars Monday on $300 cash bail. Aside from the bloody elbow, the woman was not injured.
