PORTLAND, Maine — An Old Orchard Beach man was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court to a year and a day in prison for possession of child pornography.

Ludger R. Binette, 65, also was sentenced to 10 years of supervised release, according to a press release issued by the U.S Attorney’s Office.

U.S. District Judge George Singal ordered that Binette begin serving his sentence immediately.

Binette pleaded guilty to the charge in April, according to court documents.

Information about how he came to the attention of investigators in May 2009 was not included in court documents or the press release. Images of child pornography were found on a computer in Binette’s bedroom, according to the prosecution of events to which he pleaded guilty.

Binette admitted to investigators that he had viewed child pornography but “was just looking to see what it looks like and then find out its pretty bad,” according to the prosecution version. He also said, “I just want to know what it looks like, I don’t stare at it.”

The images found on Binette’s computer depicted minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Binette faced up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
