UNION, Maine — Tax bills that are up an average of about 3 percent will be in the mail this week for property owners.

The Select Board set the tax rate last week at $14.40 per $1,000 of assessed property. This is a 2.9 percent increase from last year.

About 62 cents of every dollar being raised by the town is paid to Regional School Unit 40. The town will be raising $3.1 million in taxes this year and will be paying RSU 40 $1.9 million. This is an increase of about $56,000.

About one third of the taxes ($1 million) will go for paying municipal services. The remaining approximately $200,000 will go to Knox County which provides police patrols in the community.

The first half of the taxes is due to be paid by Nov. 15. The second half is due May 15.
