ORONO, Maine — University of Maine faculty, students, staff and alumni will celebrate the life of former Honors College Dean Charlie Slavin from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the Collins Center for the Arts.

The 58-year-old mathematician who led the Honors College for 15 years died unexpectedly at his home on July 30.

Friends, colleagues and members of Slavin’s family will speak at the event. The women’s a cappella group Renaissance will perform a musical number and a video slide show will display some of Slavin’s contributions to the university over the nearly three decades he spent there.

Hundreds of UMaine students and alumni raised their steins and had a drink in Slavin’s memory in August, after a former student of Slavin’s started a Facebook event urging people to do so in honor of him.

A reception will be held at the Collins Center after Friday’s remembrance ceremony.

If you have any questions about the event, contact Rep. Emily Cain, Honors College coordinator of advancement, at 581-3308 or emily.cain@umit.maine.edu.

Those who cannot attend in person can access a live Web stream by visiting http://bp-manager.ume.maine.edu and clicking on “Today’s Programs.”
