VERONA ISLAND, Maine — The town will spend more than double what it originally planned to fix the roof at its Town Hall, according to a town official.
Eight people turned out last week to a special meeting to approve a $7,000 increase to the original allocation of $6,500 approved at the annual Town Meeting in April, said Assistant Clerk Cheryl Grindle.
The extra money was needed after bids came back higher than expected. Grindle said the money will pay for supplies and labor to fit the roof with new asphalt shingles. Orcutt Builders of Orland will take on the job, she said.
Grindle said the roof has leaked in the past, and patchwork repairs have kept it watertight.
“The roof is old and it’s time for some upkeep,” she said Friday. “It’s not leaking now, but we wanna fix it before it does.”
