Biggs gives UMFK women 1-0 win in opener

AMHERST, N.Y. — The University of Maine-Fort Kent opened the women’s soccer season with a 1-0 win over Sheridan College (Ontario, Canada) on Friday afternoon.

Theresa Biggs scored the eventual game-winner with 34:31 left in the first half on an assist from Kayla Richards, tapping her shot over Sheridan Keeper Lianne Schlicter.

UMFK (1-0) goalkeeper Kimika Forbes recorded six of her nine saves in the second half to earn the shutout in her first career collegiate start. The teams were even in shots at 14.

Schlicter (4 saves) split time in goal with Alyssa Texeira (1 save) for 0-1 Sheridan.

Men’s soccer

UM-Fort Kent 1, Daemen 0

At Fort Kent, freshman midfielder Curvin Bannister scored of a Neon Brown assist with 26.5 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the University of Maine-Fort Kent to a season-opening USCAA victory over Daemen College (Amherst, N.Y.).

UMFK outshot Daemen 19-4.

St. Joseph’s 3, USM 2

At Gorham, Saint Joseph’s scored three unanswered goals in a span of seven minutes Friday to tip University of Southern Maine 3-2 in the first game of the USM Soccer Classic at Hannaford Field.

Ross Suleski had a hand in all three goals, scoring the first two of the match and assisting on the game-winner, which was scored by Ralph Houanche in the 81st minute.

USM’s Mazen Aljari scored off a Michael Daniel feed at the 13:29 mark and Luke Pugsley scored unassisted 52 seconds into the second to make it 2-0.

Suleski scored goals 5:41 apart to tie the game, with Jason Wade assisting on the first. Paulo Lopes set up the second.

Houanche scored 1:36 after the second goal by Suleski, who assisted on the winner.

Kenny Grade of Saint Joseph’s made three stops while USM’s Korey Mulherin posted five saves.

UNE 2, MMA 1

At Biddeford, Will Bushey scored his second goal of the game on a header, breaking a tie in the 82nd minute to give the University of New England the victory over Maine Maritime Academy in a mutual men’s soccer season-opener.

Bushey’s goal came off Matthew Christie cross from the left flank. Bushey had made it 1-1 when he directed a service from Scott Mitchell with his head. Ethan Wells added an assist on the play.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead when Evan Turmenne scored on a rebound off a blocked shot with just 2:09 elapsed.

Aidan McParland made seven saves for UNE, while William Trace Lacour stopped three shots for the Mariners.
