EASTPORT, Maine — The third annual International Pirate Lobster Boat Races will be held off the Eastport breakwater pier at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, featuring what’s being billed as “the fastest lobster boat in the world.”
Returning to Eastport for the event will be Galen Alley of Beals Island, skipper of a lobster boat with a 638-cubic-inch, alcohol-injected, supercharged engine that powers a boat that has been clocked at 72.8 mph.
Beyond supercharged engines, most race categories are for working lobster boats participating from harbors along the Down East coastline.
The races will follow a noontime parade of boats and crews decked out in pirate dress as part of the 2012 Eastport Pirate Festival.
Organizers say that, because of its accessible waterfront, Eastport is considered one of the best locations to watch lobster boat racing in Maine.
