PORTLAND, Maine — A man is facing a felony robbery charge after snatching a woman’s purse in the Old Port on Monday, according to police.

A 72-year-old woman had just made a transaction at a Commercial Street bank when Sebastian Agrell, 19, of Portland started to follow her, Lt. Scott Pelletier said.

Agrell snuck up behind the victim and grabbed her purse, which contained an undisclosed amount of money, a driver’s license, a bank card and cellphone, Pelletier said.

When Agrell took the purse, the woman nearly fell to the ground, according to Pelletier. The woman screamed for help, and witnesses gave chase.

One man was able to corner Agrell in a Market Street alley until officers arrived. Agrell was arrested and booked on a Class A charge of robbery. He remains at the Cumberland County Jail, and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

The woman was not injured in the incident.
