NAMI Bangor announces free Family Education Program

BANGOR, Maine — NAMI Bangor with the National Alliance on Mental Illness Maine will sponsor a free Family Education Program for families of those diagnosed with mental illness. The 12-week series of classes will be offered 6-8:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, Sept. 20, in Bangor. The course will offer information about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and other mental illnesses. Coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, basic information about medications, listening and communication techniques, problem solving skills, recover and rehabilitation and self-care around worry and stress also will be offered.

The curriculum was written by an experienced family member mental health professional. The course will be taught by NAMI family member volunteers from the Bangor area who have taken intensive training as course instructors.

The course is designed for parents, siblings, spouses, teenage and adult children, and significant others of those with severe and persistent mental illness.
