BAR HARBOR, Maine — Thanks to some donations from well-known summer residents of Mount Desert Island, the local hospital has completed its capital campaign for its latest building project ahead of schedule, according to a hospital official.

MDI Hospital had expected to finish raising $1.7 million for its new Women’s Health Center by the end of the calendar year, hospital spokesman Bill Swain said Friday. With the help of unspecified donations from Dick and Noelle Wolf of Seal Harbor, and from the family of William P. Stewart of Northeast Harbor, the hospital has already reached that goal.

“We’re four months ahead,” Swain said.

The new center is to be named after Lisa Stewart, William P. Stewart’s daughter, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 52. The facility, which will be next to a three-story medical office building on Main Street that the hospital acquired in January 2011, will have 3,700 feet of floor space. It will be approximately twice as large as the hospital’s existing women’s health center, which is located in a former private home on Wayman Lane.

In a prepared statement released this week, MDI Hospital CEO Art Blank said the organization is grateful for the donations. He said the hospital has benefitted from strong community support since it was founded in 1897.

“We are honored that the Stewart family has chosen to include MDI Hospital to be part of the recognition of Lisa’s memory in this place that was near and dear to her,” Blank said. “Thanks to our very generous benefactors, we are able to meet our facility’s challenges to provide exceptional care for today’s and tomorrow’s women in our community.”

Noelle Wolf, a member of the hospital’s board of trustees, said in the statement that her husband’s mother also was a supporter of the hospital and of initiatives to improve women’s health.

“Dick and I are pleased to support this project that will serve this community,” Noelle Wolf said.

Swain said that, with completion of the capital campaign, construction could begin as early as this coming January. Hospital officials hope the center will be finished and open for business by the fall of 2013, he said.

Swain said the hospital was able last year to acquire the property where the center will be located, which includes the medical office building next door, and a neighboring hotel because of a $1 million gift the hospital received from Ruth and Tristram Colket of Bar Harbor.

Dick Wolf is a network television producer, best known for producing shows such as “Miami Vice” and the “Law & Order” series. William P. Stewart, a retired investment banker from New York, is known locally for having thrown lavish Fourth of July parties in the mid-2000s at his estate overlooking Somes Sound, complete with live music by famous country musicians such as Reba McEntire and Randy Travis.
