I recently photographed this juvenile broad-winged hawk at Sunkkaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.

While leaving the Johnson Brook Trail area, I noticed the hawk swoop down into the ditch. I stopped my vehicle and rolled down the window and prepared the camera.

Usually I turn the CD player sound down or off, but this time I hadn’t thought of it. John Denver and Placido Domingo were belting out “Perhaps Love” as the hawk flew from the ditch onto an alder branch and seemed to be “swayin’ to the music” as I clicked away. I’ve discovered that music and wildlife seem to complement each other very well.

The eastern kingbird feeding it’s chick, the green heron and the belted kingfisher were Essex Street Marsh residents while the white-tailed buck deer was caught in the woods near my home. An unexpected composition was taken on Beech Mountain Acadia National Park. The dark-eyed junco seems to be interested in the background observer.
