BIDDEFORD, Maine — Two people went to the hospital Monday after a motorcycle struck a van, police said.

David Garland, 41, of Sanford was operating his 1987 Yamaha bike on Route 111 when a van driven by James McGuire, 68, of Lyman failed to yield to the bike while attempting to turn onto the highway from Hill Road, according to Maj. Bill King of the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Garland’s bike struck McGuire’s van near the front wheel on the driver’s side, King said. Garland and his passenger, Elaine St. Amand, whose address was not known, were taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford with serious injuries.

McGuire was not injured in the accident. Route 111 was shut down for 2½ hours while Maine Game Warden Eric Blanchard reconstructed the crash.
