Man charged with OUI after allegedly rolling vehicle on Portland-South Portland bridge

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A Massachusetts man was charged with operating under the influence early Saturday after rolling his vehicle on Veterans Memorial Bridge, according to police.

Daniel Thomas, 22, of Shrewsbury, Mass., was already outside of his overturned Dodge van when police arrived on the scene just before 1 a.m., South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark said in a Monday morning news release.

Thomas was checked out by medical personnel at the scene and then turned over to police, who determined that he was under the influence, the release said.

Thomas was arrested and booked into the Cumberland County Jail on the OUI charge, according to the release.

The accident remains under investigation, and speed and alcohol are likely to be contributing factors, Clark said. The case has been sent to the district attorney’s office for review.
