BANGOR, Maine — For the second straight year, a strong opening round carried a golfer to the Bangor Golf Classic title.
After posting a 7-under-par 64 in Saturday’s first round at Bangor Municipal Golf Course, Jason Harvey of Bangor cruised to a 69 Sunday and a five-stroke victory in the third annual event for amateur golfers.
Harvey, who also won the inaugural event in 2010, defeated Bill Hutchins, who plays out of Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, by five strokes. Hutchins shot a pair of 69s for his 138.
The tournament is sponsored by Massimo’s Cucina Italiana of Bangor.
Lance Bernier, out of JaTo Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, was the only other player who finished under par. He opened with a 67 Saturday, but fell back when he shot a 74 Sunday for a 141.
Thomas Murray of Bangor Muni took fourth with 70-73 for 143.
Defending champion Joe Alvarez, also from PVCC, tied for fifth with matching 72s for 144. His total was matched by PVCC clubmates Len Cole and Casey Catell. Cole posted a 70 and a 74, while Catell registered the same scores as Cole but in reverse order.
Jim Fahey of the host club took top honors in B flight with rounds of 78 and 76 for 154. He edged Calvin Beal of Barren View Golf Course in Jonesboro (80-75—155) and Bob Tweedie of Bangor Municipal (80-76—156).
Jeremy Gifford of Rocky Knoll Country Club in Orrington cruised to a six-stroke victory in C flight after shooting a 79 Saturday and a 78 Sunday for 157. Allain Thibodeau of Bangor Muni was the runner-up with rounds of 82 and 81 for 163.
Liz Coffin of Bangor Muni won the ladies’ flight as she also hit red numbers Sunday. Coffin recorded a 69 to finish with a two-day score of 145.
