MACHIAS, Maine — While Washington County’s countless thousands of acres of wild blueberries love rain showers, the same can’t said for the organizers of the 37th annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival that begins Friday, Aug. 17.

All eyes will be on the sky during the long list of events planned for the three-day extravaganza that every August attracts thousands to downtown Machias. While the National Weather Service in Caribou is now predicting a 30-50 percent chance of showers or thundershowers during each day of the festivities, even rain won’t dampen one now-for-something-different event.

This year’s showcase event on Sunday, August 19, is a public wedding. The festival’s co-chairs — Ellen Farnsworth and Don Green — will be married at 2:30 p.m., weather permitting, outside on the steps of the Centre Street Congregational Church, which is the festival’s sponsor.

Rain or shine, activities planned range from live entertainment and a children’s parade to blueberry pie-eating and cooking contests. There is also a one-mile fun run, a five-mile road race and tours of nearby blueberry farms. Throughout the festival, streets and parking lots will be jammed with crafters and vendors, with there being no shortage of fair food options.
