Bangor man arrested after police spot pot in backpack

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man was arrested Sunday night on a charge of furnishing marijuana after police spotted several bags of the drug in his backpack.

Ricky Waugh, 57, came to the attention of Bangor police Officer Kyle Pelky about 10:30 p.m. because he was in public with an open bottle of liquor, Bangor police Sgt. Bob Bishop said Monday night.

After the officer dumped the liquor, he detected a strong marijuana aroma coming from Waugh’s direction. The source of the odor turned out to be several bags of marijuana in Waugh’s big black backpack, which was open. The bags were in plain view, Bishop said.

“He was so inebriated that he didn’t realize that his backpack was open” and that the bags were in plain view, Bishop said.

Pelky seized the pot and placed Waugh under arrest.
