Portland police seeking man who tossed lit firework into parked car

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — Police are looking for a man who lit a firework and tossed it into a parked vehicle on Cumberland Avenue in July.

Portland police Detective Brian Letarte said the incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. July 17.

One of the empty vehicle’s rear windows was open, Letarte said, giving the suspect an easy target for the firework.

“It was a five-shot Roman candle,” Letarte said. “Surprisingly [the car] wasn’t torched beyond our recognition.”

The vehicle sustained damage to the rear seats and floor mats, Letarte said. It is currently at a repair shop.

Police say the suspect is a white male, and he got away in what appeared on surveillance video to be a Volkswagen Jetta or a Honda Civic.

“Because of the glare from the headlights, we cannot make out or narrow down the make of the car or get the license plate,” Letarte said.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Portland police at 874-8533.
