BINGHAM, Maine — A local man was arrested and a woman was summoned after being caught with copper piping stolen from a vacant home on Sunday, police said.

Somerset County Sheriff’s Department Cpl. Ritchie Putman came across a parked car with its lights on and the trunk open on U.S. Route 201 at 1 a.m. Sunday, according to Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II.

Putnam located a male and female near the vehicle, said Gottardi.

“After receiving conflicting reports as to what the pair were doing at this spot, Corporal Putnam checked a vacant residence next to where the vehicle was parked to see if the residence was secure,” said Gottardi.

Gottardi said it was determined that the male subject entered the residence and cut copper piping from the basement and placed the piping near the vehicle.

Eric Thompson, 28, of Bingham was charged with Class B burglary and Class E theft and taken to Somerset County Jail in Madison.

Seigi Brillard, 28, of Bingham was summoned for Class D criminal trespass.

“She reportedly entered the upper level of residence,” said Gottardi.

The copper was valued at about $200, he said.
